Spotlight
Contemporary American pagan music fuses world-wide influences with America’s unique musical vocabulary to create an astounding variety of sounds.
“Surely all the Gods are with us” meshes minor-key melodies with a jazz/rock drive.
In a more classical vein, Abbie Betinis’ inventive “Spell of the Elements” shows the influence of Bernstein and Sondheim.
Even Hollywood provides inspiration: “Turn the World Around” is Harry Belafonte’s joyous calypso tribute to the four metaphysical elements while Gary Rosen’s “Icarus” features cool jazz sounds that recall the StarTrek soundtracks.
Celtic music is represented, as well. “Winds Four Quarters” appears in popular Celtic fantasy novels by Mercedes Lackey. Gwydion Pendderwen, one of the first and most prominent of America’s pagan composers, was also inspired by Celtic folk music. Orpheus gives his defiant anthem, “We Won’t Wait” with a fullon gospel treatment.
