A Rite of Remembrance
“As candles are lit, we are between the worlds.
We are beyond the bounds of time.
Where Night and Day,
Birth and Death,
Joy and Sorrow
Meet as one.”
Our candle-lit Rite of Remembrance resonates with themes of loss, love, and consolation. Encroaching darkness and reverent silence move us between light and dark as we honor those who are no longer with us but live on in our hearts.
Join us in weaving a tapestry of remembrance with spoken words and transcendent music of Johannes Brahms, Shawn Kitchener, Elaine Hagenberg, Mark Sirett and many more.

Spotlight
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897)

In 1881, Brahms set “Nänie”, a poem by Friedrich Schiller, to honor the death of his friend, the painter Anselm Feuerbach.
In doing so, he united three artists profoundly influenced by Classical Greek culture and philosophy: the painter Feuerbach, poet Schiller, and Brahms himself.
Schiller’s poem meditates on the inevitability of death, the transience of beauty, and the comfort that comes from remembrance.
In Nänie, he references three Greek myths: Orpheus losing Eurydice to the Underworld; Aphrodite mourning the brutal death of her lover, Adonis; and Thetis lamenting the death of her son, Achilles.
Nänie and Brahms’ “German Requiem” share moments of serene intimacy and climaxes of majestic grandeur. Like the Requiem, Nänie closes on a note of consolation, that dying with a song of lament on the lips of one’s loved ones is glorious.
Orpheus will perform “Nänie” with orchestra in Carnegie Hall in the spring of 2027.
